Understanding TDS in Drinking Water

TDS is one of the most commonly cited numbers in drinking water — but what does it actually measure, and how much should you read into it?

If you have ever seen a water bottle label or a purifier box mention “TDS,” you have run into one of the most frequently cited — and most frequently misunderstood — numbers in drinking water. TDS stands for Total Dissolved Solids, and it is worth understanding what it does and does not tell you.

What TDS actually measures

TDS is a measurement of everything dissolved in water that isn’t the water molecule itself — minerals, salts, and other dissolved compounds, added together into a single number, usually expressed in parts per million (ppm). It is a useful, quick indicator, but it is a sum, not a breakdown. A TDS reading on its own does not tell you which minerals are present or in what proportion.

Higher isn’t automatically worse, and lower isn’t automatically better

A common misconception is that lower TDS always means “purer” or “safer” water. In reality, very low TDS water has had virtually all minerals removed, which can leave it tasting flat, while water with some dissolved minerals often tastes fuller and more balanced. The right range depends on the source and the intended use, not a single universal target.

Reading the number in context

Rather than chasing a specific TDS figure, it helps to think of it as one data point among several — alongside taste, clarity, and the reputation of the source or brand. Consistency over time is often more meaningful than any single reading.
