Calcium and magnesium

These two are often mentioned together because they are the main contributors to what is commonly called water “hardness.” They are naturally present in many groundwater sources and are part of what gives mineral water its characteristic taste and mouthfeel.

Potassium and sodium

Usually present in smaller amounts, these minerals also shape taste — and their balance relative to each other and to calcium and magnesium is part of what makes one water source taste distinct from another.

Why the balance matters more than any single mineral
